Acupuncture for COPD
Acupuncture for COPD
Acupuncture may be a great new approach to COPD symptom management. A small study was recently completed which showed that the patients who had been given acupuncture along with their medications were able to walk or exercise longer without wheezing than those who had received a placebo. The patients who received the placebo treatment underwent fake acupuncture; the needles never entered their skin.

Although the researchers are unsure exactly how the acupuncture helps, they believe that the needles may help to relax the muscles around the lungs, allowing the patient to breather easier. They also believe that the acupuncture helps with digestion. Many COPD patients lose weight as their bodies have difficulty digesting and converting foods. Acupuncture is also reputed to help reduce anxiety. The can also help to relax the muscle bands around the lungs.

As stated in the study, acupuncture should always be completed in conjunction with a prescription medication regimen. Talk to your doctor about whether or not you should buy Symbicort, one of the most popular medications currently approved for treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Although idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is incurable, sufferers can lead a full life. However, it does not come without a price. The only way to get rid of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is with a new set of lungs. But these have come from someone else’s sacrifice.

Helene Campbell, Canada’s most famous pulmonary fibrosis sufferer, recently received a set of new lungs from a donor. She says she is incredibly grateful, and is currently learning how to function with her new set of lungs, including the multiple new anti-rejection drugs she is required to take.

For those who are waiting for new lungs, or are not eligible for the long transplant wait list, there is another option. Prescription Esbriet, or pirfenidone, is the only medication currently approved for treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. You can buy pirfenidone and other Canadian prescription drugs from online Canada pharmacies.

Woman with COPD
Woman with COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a group of lung problems, is affecting more women than ever before. There are currently 2 million women in the United States who have been diagnosed with COPD, compared to only 1.5 million men. COPD has many causes, but is often a result of a lifetime of smoking, or growing up in a smoking environment. Since the 70s and 80s, numbers of female smokers have steadily risen. This may be a factor in the rising numbers of women with COPD.

With the beginning of the retirement of the baby-boomers, women who have smoked all of their lives are finding themselves sick. Some doctors suggest that significant disparity between women and men suffering COPD could be attributed to women’s ease with doctors. Men are more likely to consider symptoms to be unimportant.

If you have COPD, there are some things you can do to make living with COPD easier.

1. Seek support – there are lots of online forums, or meetings designed to provide emotional support for those living with COPD. Ask your doctor about local meetings.
2. Be more organized – as you probably know, COPD can sap your energy very fast. Daily tasks seem more difficult. Try to organize your life in a way that you can travel the least, and are sure of where everything is. Going up and down stairs, or to the store twice, causes you to lose your breath fast.
3. Get help – if you are no longer able to easily complete your day to day tasks, hire an assistant. They can help you bring in groceries from the car, help you cook, or simply be someone to talk to.
4. Follow your treatment plan – this is important. Even if you are having a good day, and don’t feel that you need it; you should take your daily medication such as generic Singulair. These medications work continually overtime, so suddenly stopping may cause your symptoms to flare.

Talk to your doctor about which course of treatment is right for your symptoms. Then, consider filling your prescription at an Canadian pharmacies; you will save on your medications, and have them delivered right to your door.

Cured Meats may Aggregate COPD
Cured Meats May Aggregate COPD
A Spanish study was recently released detailing the effects of cured meats on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) sufferers. COPD is usually caused by smoking, but researchers are currently looking into other causes of this deadly disease. This research has started by understanding the disease in current patients.

They found that people who ate a significant amount of cured meats such as hot dogs, cooked ham, and sausages, were more than twice as likely to be hospitalized for their COPD. Although the scientists could not discern exactly what caused this, they believe it may have a correlation with the high levels of nitrites in the cured meats, or with the high sodium levels.

If you are suffering from COPD or another lung disease such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, consider buying your medications online, from a Canadian pharmacy online.

Secondhand smoke doubles risk of COPD for children
Secondhand smoke doubles risk of COPD
A new study has been released detailing the high risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for people exposed to second-hand smoke as a child. Those who grew up in a house with one or both parents smoking created risk almost double that of a second-hand smoke free household.

The study was completed in Norway between 2006 and 2009. The researchers questioned 433 adults about their household situations while growing up. The study found that those who had grown up in a smoking household were significantly more likely to be burdened with lung diseases. In addition to the findings about risk for children, the Norwegian researchers also found that women were at an even higher risk than men for developing COPD.

Although the public has known for years that smoking cigarettes leads to long-term consequences, it is studies like these that remind us that our choices are also affecting our children. Smoking cessation aid medications are becoming more and more popular. In fact, Health Canada is now offering medications such as Zyban or Chantix for free (with a prescription) as part of a plan to reduce the numbers of smokers in Canada. Talk to your doctor about smoking cessation medications.

Smoking also leads to pulmonary fibrosis, which in cases like these, can be stopped. However, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is an unstoppable hardening of the lungs’ bronchial tubes, which will eventually be fatal. IPF patients however, can buy Esbriet, a revolutionary medication designed to slow the advance of IPF. Talk to your doctor about a prescription for Esbriet, which can be bought online at a Canada pharmacy.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by shortened breath, coughing, and often large amounts of phlegm. Many patients experience these symptoms in sudden flares – that is, they have no symptoms and then unexpectedly are feeling very sick.

COPD isn’t considered to be effectively treatable, and many people will have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. Doctors however, were unable to believe that this could happen. Some scientists believe that COPD is caused by a bacterial lung infection. To discern the validity of their hypothesis, researchers studied 570 COPD patients for one year. Half were given a daily dose of azithromycin, and half were given a placebo. These doses were in addition to their regular medications.

Azithromycin is commonly used for ear infections, strep throat, and pneumonia. After taking azithromycin for a year, researchers reported up to 20% less flare ups of COPD and fewer overall symptoms. The antibiotics regimen is recommended for COPD patients with mild to moderate symptoms. One patient reported significant changes – where he once could only walk a block or two, after the antibiotics regimen he could walk up to five miles.

Although the researchers admit that the chance of antibiotic resistance was high, they did not find that it adversely affected the patients. The researchers found antibiotic resistant microbes in some patients. More research will be needed into long-term effects of this type of antibiotic regimen for COPD patients, but the first results are considered to be positive.

In order to save on your antibiotics, try a Canadian online pharmacy. In Canada, the government regulates the pricing of medications, in order to keep the prices lower for their citizens. However, with a Canadian online pharmacy, Americans and others are able to take advantage of the significant discounts when they buy Zithromax or buy Valtrex.

Breathe More Easily With Steam

Scientists have recently developed a new technique to ease the suffering of people with chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis. By blasting steam into the lungs, scientists have seen significant reductions in the breathing difficulties of their patients. Along with making breathing easier, the steam technique also helped lung patients have a greater quality of life, and better lung function.

The first step in this procedure is to discern which parts of the lungs are affected by the lung disease. Doctors then put a small balloon into the lung through a tube and inflate it, blocking off the affected area of the lung. This is to protect the healthy parts of the lungs from the steam. The doctors then fire super-heated steam through a small tube directly into the lungs. The steam shrinks the lungs’ alveoli over the course of a few weeks, the same way that scar tissue tightens around a scab. This creates more space in the lungs, so patients can take in more air while breathing.

Another plus about this new technique is its efficacy for such a short procedure. Patients undergoing the steam technique will only require an overnight stay at a hospital. Previous treatments for lung diseases and problems involve invasive surgery. This can include anything from taking out a section of the lung surgery, up to a full lung transplant, which requires weeks of post-surgery rehabilitation and many immunosuppressive drugs.

Like the more invasive surgeries though, this procedure does reduce lung capacity, only without fully removing the affected parts of the lungs. More results are required before this procedure becomes main stream – doctors will need to see if the benefits outweigh the risks to patients. However, the outcome is currently looking good. The procedure has been approved in several countries, with doctors performing the procedure on a German patient last month.

Irish scientists have recently discovered a new treatment for obstructive lung conditions. This new method may be able to treat emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other conditions caused by pulmonary hypertension. This group of diseases, called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is the third leading cause of death in America. Over 120,000 people died from these conditions in 2007.

The new approach to COPD looks for a specific blood protein called “gremlin”. Gremlin has been linked to pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension is a potentially fatal build up of high blood pressure in the lungs and arteries. It is often caused by smoking, or exposure to environmental pollutants of second-hand smoke. Gremlin is produced by the body when there is a shortage of oxygen in the lungs.

Researchers used this information to try to protect their test subjects (mice) from pulmonary hypertension. They discovered that by genetically altering the mice to produce less gremlin, the mice were less likely to have pulmonary hypertension.

The lead researchers say that this information will serve as a guideline for creating new medications designed to treat pulmonary hypertension and its associated conditions. This discovery is well timed, as statistics say that chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases will be the third leading cause of death by 2020, as smoking rates are increasing.

Breastfeeding can boost babies
Breastfeeding can boost babies' lung function
A second study has come out corroborating the results of one recently published in the American Journal of Respiratory Care and Critical Care Medicine. It states that babies who were exclusively breastfed are more likely to develop better lung functioning than their formula-fed counterparts. This is especially true for babies born to an asthmatic mother.

Previous studies have shown that these babies may have less lung function, and were more likely to develop asthma as an adult. Although it is encouraged by doctors, not all women are able to produce enough milk to breastfeed exclusively. Be sure to ask your doctor if you should buy domperidone, a medication that increases milk production.

This new study, which was conducted in New Zealand, used a survey format instead of physical testing. They followed their subject from birth and then once the children were 6 years old, researchers asked parents about their lung function. The researchers asked which children had been diagnosed with asthma, had used an inhaler, or wheezed in the last year.

After interviewing the parents of about 1000 children, the researchers discovered that each month of exclusive breastfeeding reduced the chance of asthma by about 9 percent.
